Nelly has quietly built up a solid hip-hop mogul resume these past couple of years. Unlike the current hip-hop moguls like Diddy, 50 Cent and Jay-Z, Nelly has taken a quieter approach to his business dealings. Let’s take a look at the WoooHa, Inc. Hip-Hop Mogul Score Card and see how he fares…

Successful clothing line? Score: 8 (out of 10) Nelly launched Apple Bottom Jeans in 2003 with a resounding success and has turned his fashion line into a multi-million dollar empire with an entire accessory line including footwear, handbags, eyewear RX, intimates, sunglasses, accessories, jewelry, cold weather, and girl’s apparel. Vokal, his mens line continues to do steady numbers as well.

Energy Drink and/or Alcoholic Drink? Score: 6.¬† In 2004, Nelly’s local energy Pimp Juice went international. Claiming to have more kick but safer than Red Bull, Pimp Juice was the energy drink of choice for thousands of St. Louis kids back in the day.

Acting Career? Score: 4. Well maybe not as established as Curtis Jackson or Christopher “Ludacris” Bridges but he’s getting there. Nelly was in the football film The Longest Yard and he will now be guest-starring in a two-episode arch of “CSI: NY.” And although not part of acting, Nelly was chosen by Diddy to be the spokesmodel for Sean John Underwear. This can’t hurt from a publicity angle.

Real Estate and/or restaurant? Score: 8. Probably the most important way to gain real long-term economic wealth. Even with the recent fall out of Wall Street and the housing market there is still long-term value in real estate, if you can afford to ride out the current downward trend. Even with this current economy, Nelly is moving full-force with his real estate efforts. Nelly talks about his development company and his recent announcement that he is opening a sports bar.

“This development company that I have back home, I‚Äôve purchased a city block in downtown St. Louis. I have an new sports bar called Skybox.” Realizing he’s not at Jay-Z status yet he adds “You know it‚Äôs not a 40/40, more like a 20/20 you know, but just tryin’ to stay busy.”

Considering the 40/40 Club’s recent fate, maybe it’s best that Nelly is not trying to model his bar off of 40/40. So there you have it. When it all adds up, Nelly’s Hip-Hop Mogul Score is 27/40 which puts him in pretty good company. The only thing he is missing is a restaurant, but the sports bar will qualify him. And in this day and age of the rap game, we all know you don’t need a hit album to make your millions. Not too bad for a guy who was once known for wearing batting gloves and that baseball stripe thing under his eye.
