For those of you hardcore comic book fans out there, you might have picked up on the signs from Iron Man that a Captain America movie was in the works. Marvel Studios has indeed confirmed that the movie is indeed set for a May 6, 2011 release and is officially entitled The First Avenger: Captain America with a script from the writer of X-Men: The Last Stand and Behind Enemy Lines.

But the bigger news is who is now rumored to play the lead of Steve Rogers (aka Captain America). Even non-comic book fans know that Captain America is as “white” as white can be along with a heroic, charming attitude to go with it. This is why rumors of Matthew McConaughey and Brad Pitt were flying around. However, in a recent interview with MTV Derek Luke stated ‚Äú[Marvel] offered Will Smith Captain America‚Äù and added that ‚Äúit just shows you how times have changed.‚Äù

While Luke is most likely misinformed, the possibility of Will Smith as the all-American superhero (no, Hancock didn’t cut it) just shows how broad Will Smith’s appeal really is. Considering Smith just confirmed yesterday that he will play the lead in The Last Pharaoh, it might be hard for him to find the time to be the King of Egypt and the Captain of America. But if any one can pull it off…it’s Will. Via: Slash Film

Update: And as quickly as we post this rumor, it is now officially killed. Various Marvel Studios sources are saying Will was never approached to play Captain America. Oh well…it was good while it lasted.
