Attention all aspiring hip-hop artists! Do you have what it takes to join the ranks of Jay-Z, Diddy, 50 Cent, Master P and Jermaine Dupri as a multi-business, multi-millionaire hip-hop mogul? It’s ok if you don’t have a record label or haven’t released an album in over five years. All you need is WoooHa, Inc.’s “5 Steps To Becoming A Hip-Hop Mogul.”
Step 1. Create your hip-hop name. Then change it to your real name. Then change it back.
A true hip-hop mogul’s name is never constant. The first step to becoming a hip-hop mogul is to establish your hip-hop moniker and then change it to your real name. Master P just did it. He now only wants to be referred to as Percy Miller. Ludaris is about to do it and wants to be called Christopher Bridges after his last album drops. To up your mogul game, you can also change your name to multiple variations thus confusing everyone and increasing your mogul status. Example: Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, Sean Combs, Diddy.
Step 2. Create a fashion line.
This is the hip-hop mogul’s bread-and-butter. What separates a hip-hop mogul’s fashion line from the rest is all in the distribution. Fashion lines like Clipes’ upcoming Play Cloths, Eve’s revamped Fetish and Fabolous’ Yung Rich line all have limited or boutique distribution. But the big players like Diddy’s Sean John, Jay’s Rocawear, 50 Cent’s G-Unit Clothing (now relaunching) and Master P’s Wal-Mart clothing line all have major nation-wide distribution in major department and retail stores. The bigger the distribution, the bigger the checks.
Step 3. Get into Hollywood any way you can.
Diddy has literally hired a Hollywood Dream Team to jump start his acting career. But while he is still struggling to get acting gigs, he is racking up millions of dollars with his TV producing deals with MTV. Master P just launched his Better Black TV network to challenge BET, T.I. has his own production company Grand Hustle and a new deal with Sony Screen Gems, Dr. Dre, Kanye and 50 Cent all have film production deals and mini-moguls such as Common, Ludacris and Mos Def have proved their is successful life outside of hip-hop as their movie deals keep rolling in.
Step 4. Start a social-media website.
Standard artist websites were so 2001. Now it’s all about the social-media sites that combine fan/user generated content with blogs, video and streaming music. 50 Cent’s ThisIs50.com is the poster-child for a successful social media site as it creates an entire new revenue stream for the G-Unit general. Even The Game’s blatant rip-off ThisIzGame.com is a suitable model as well.
Step 5. Get into the tabloids.
A real hip-hop mogul is one that has crossed over to mainstream appeal. How do you know if you have mainstream appeal? It’s when Perez Hilton or TMZ starts covering you. It’s when you are on the front page of every tabloid for stepping in dog crap, for assaulting paparazzi and for dating Michael Jackson’s sister.
Of course this is just a light-hearted look at what it takes to rule the hip-hop world, but there is a lot of truth to it. All jokes aside, it really does start with the music. Every hip-hop mogul, at one time or another, ruled the charts of hip-hop through their own music or through their production entities. It’s only though their insight, street smarts and business savvy that the select few have been able to use their name as a brand to succeed in multiple ventures outside the hip-hop world. WoooHa, Inc. will continue to monitor the trends of hip-hop and moguldom and share with our readers.

Funny, but true.
Dont forget the alcohol drink or beverage of some type. Thats always a necessity for any mogul to get into. Now how often does it work? Who cares! As long as they can claim they can have it. All they do is just follow each other and the latest trends like mindless lemmings.
Step 5 is the truth. Once you reach the big time you get the headlines. T.I. will be there next. I guarantee it. Amusing read. My first time here from Global Grind.
You say the music matters but the truth is its all about branding not the music. What has DIddy done lately? DOnny KLANG? Danity Kayne? Jay’s albums dont go platinum no more and JD has just been riding off Janet. Thats all my opinion. Take it or leave it.
I hate those social media sites and I agree that hip-hop needs to really step up and be more original. 50 was good for thisis50 but then EVERYONE just jumped on that. Come up with something new! Then I’ll give you the credit you deserve
You forgot the number one thing.
Become a hip hop icon. lol
This is a good staring point, a great way to get things started ‘Making of A Mogul”
Don’t forget the Basketball sports team, Jay Z is the perfect example of the Mogul to be, sort of, as an executive he has a shaky record, you may say, Rocafella had things on lock, not really, Jay Z, had things on lock and the Roc rode with him, they didn’t add, Beans (3 Albums), Free (2 ALBUMS), Bleek (3 OR 4), State Prop (2) Dame (1) Young Gunz (2) Soundtracks (1) never really sold, maybe all of them add up to about 10 million records, and that is great but to say your “TEAM” ran the game you need more than that in the words of Hov ‘Men Lie, Woman Lie, Numbers Don’t”
So what is a great run for a team, no team has ever had a real run, maybe the closes is Bad Boy with Puff at the helm, Ma$e, Black Rob, Total, 112, Carl Thomas, Faith Evans, Dream, Puffy, Biggie all had big songs and Platinum selling albums, that was a run, maybe the strongest, ever.
Now back to the Making of A Mogul, Jay Z, he is the best for this example, made strategic moves along the way to the top, he got rid of his old guys and made himself, solo king, taking all the responsibility, after the Roc implosion, he put out Kanye, Young Gunz, Bleek, Tiera Marie, Himself, now he hit and Kanye hit but the rest was nothing, but Kanye became a cultural icon, so it was not looked at as a failure but if you are batting 40% in music, that is not good, oh yeah he dropped a DJ Clue album but it did nothing, followed by another 2 from himself and 2 from Kanye, now the numbers from him and Ye was a great thing, now Def Jam was not so, NeYo big with 2 albums, Rihanna become an international star, Mariah came back, Rick Ross, Jeezy, Fabolous, so it was a good run on some front, but LL, Roots, Meth, Red and anyone on Def Jam before he got there, so that is a 50/50 thing for Jay.
His business empire by the way just grew and grew, Rocawear ‘80 Mill in about 18 months you could BS with rap if you want” how about 120 Mill to sale
more later
Hi sorry but Jermaine Dupree does not have to ride on the coattails of Janet Jackson. JD goes really far back and that Janet is not how he remains in the realm of HIP HOP MOGAL.
He was an Artist and a large one before JANET.
