Kanye West’s fight with Stephen Colbert last week is old news. You know the story…Colbert went on his usual Comedy Central show and launched “Operation Humble Kanye” in front of millions of viewers. We knew Kanye would be quick to respond and he was. Days after Kayne wrote on his Twitter “who the f*ck is Stephen Colbert?” This gave Colbert more ammo to work with and the war continues….
This is the problem with Twitter. Yes it has legit artists telling us the latest updates in their lives. Hip-hop artists from MC Hammer, ?uestlove to Common use it. It’s a great way for fans to feel like they are connected to their lives. On the other hand, there is little regulation in regards to the numerous “impostors” out there. Usually they are quickly identified and then ignored or banned. This was not the case with Kanye. In fact, Kanye’s famous Twitter response was covered by national TV sources and online sites including Rollingstone. Problem is Kanye never even said those things as he does not have a Twitter account.
Kanye had to tell the public his own way. Through his blog with the simple entry of:
I DON’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS… THIS IS NOT ME!!!!!

Twitter was quick to react from Kanye’s OFFICIAL blog entry and quickly took down the “KanyeWest” Twitter account. This just makes you think though…next time you get an IM personally from Lil Wayne, a Twitter message from Diddy or a Facebook wall entry from Pharrell…just perhaps…perhaps it’s not them. Regardless, these “impostors” will always be around. Alright…now time for me to talk to Notorious B.I.G. on Twitter. Peace. Oh and for those spell check freaks – it’s spelled with an “o” or an “e.”

This situation is actually the basis of one of ways Twitter is reportedly looking to finally monetize: charging companies (or in this case, Kanye) for the right to have an “official” Twitter stream to prevent people from (successfully) impersonating them. I feel like Kanye would be happy to fork the dough over for that.

@ Charlie – so there IS a plan for Twitter to actually make money!
I’ve been had.
Yeti you bring up a good point there. No issues with us common folks using these net tools but when the press covers the word of celebs quoting Twitter, Facebook, etc even though its not confirmed, well thats when it can get messy. For once I agree with Kanye. I would have had them take it down too.
As long as they don’t take down @Michael_Bay we’re all going to be ok.
co-sign twittard – that and the Notorious BIG twitter are classic
Somehow I think Kanye is trying to cover his own a$$. I’ve seen twits from that account and most of the folks believed it was him quoting nonsensical ish in his Ye way.
ok i have always assumed celebrities pay companies to do stupid stuff like twitter or update their myspace in order to keep their fanbase feeling involved in whatever incendiary wacky plot they were embarking on next. realistically most celebrities seem to be shy when it come to having their lives watched.
Thats why I don’t use Twitter. I’m SOOO important and I dont want fakes.
I would be happy if a impostor was Twittering for me. At least then it would be updated.
[...] “Operation Humble Kanye”. Well now it turns out ‘Ye is crying foul. Claiming he knows nothing of the tweet and that it wasn’t him! Is Kanye speaking the truth or just trying to cover his [...]
This means you can spend Days trying to win that elusive progressive jackpot and still walk away without Twitter. In Twitter, there are weaknesses to exploit and strengths to be wary of. With MC Hammer, as soon as you log in old news, you are asked to download the war.
