From Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, B.I.G. and now Aaliyah. R&B singer Keisha Chante has been chosen to play Aaliyah in the upcoming biopic due out in theaters in 2009. According to the National Post, the ink is dry on Chante’s contract to portray the R&B singer in the as-yet-titled movie. Aaliyah’s biopic will cover the singer’s journey up to her untimely death in 2001 and will give insight into both her singing and movie career.
There are currently no major studios or producers attached and while a script has been passed around the major agencies for the past couple of years, nothing has been signed. This is why news of Chante playing the title role is a surprise to many. Until we get more info, it is highly unlikely this will be a major studio released film with the proper production and marketing budget to do this right. We will let you know if we are wrong though.
Although she had a fantastic career, does Aaliyah deserve a biopic this soon after her death? Vote it now on the Trendz Report Meter?

BIG I can understand as a story but that right after and then Aaliyah does come off as exploitative. They need to pace these out in years not months. Like you always say, hiphop follows trends and if this happens then comes the Tupac movie, then the Proof movie then Big Pun and so forth.

How a film about Aaliyah exploitation and yet the Biggie film isn’t? That doesn’t make ANY sense. And Aaliyah has been dead for almost 8 years. That’s quite a while. Selena’s movie was released two years after her passing. The Johnny Cash movie open about two years later as well. People get so hyped up about nothing. If you think it is too soon, then don’t go and see it. As for me and the rest of Aaliyah’s fans, we’ll be there opening day.

They should wait until the 10th Anniversary but If they want to do something for Aaliyah this year They could release a new album for Aaliyah with all unreleased & unheard tracks from Aaliyah. They can also have artists on the album that Aaliyah wanted to work with (Trent Reznor, Wyclef Jean, Janet Jackson, D’Angelo,etc.) If her family, Tim, & Missy want to have a biopic then that’s fine but they could have it ready for release in 2011. That’s just my opinion & believe it or not, it would be worth the wait
I come with nothing but the upmost respect for aaliyah, 4 she is my idol, but no offense 2 keshia chante, but i think she looks nothin like aaliyah they could have done much better but god works in mysterious ways so, when this movie does come out i pray 2 god that when she plays the role of aaliyah that she does it with all the passion and dedication within her being. This is a very tough role to play and alot of fans like myself will feel scarred and highly disappointed if the movie is whack. Her life is a work of art and everyone knows that. I am a very dedicated and concerned fan, please do not ruin her image, i pray that she does outstanding and that they will try their best to make keyshia chante look like her. Why all the bull over a movie? who cares how long its been and how long it hasn't been Aaliyah was talented and very beautiful, she deserves a movie Aaliyah worked her but off to get where she was, like other artist and she deserves a biography. I am a fan and always well be, even after death she still lives on in all of us through her music and her movies, Aaliyah has captured so much it's sad that her life was cut so short. Baby Girl was well on her way to something big, she was about to blow up, but GOD had something better planned and even thogh we ask Why? as I find myself doing, life goes on so I think the movie is a good idea. I really want Keshia to play Aaliyah & I’ve been praying, wishing & hoping that she will play her in the movie & give Babygirl the justice she deserves. Keshia CAN Learn Aaliyah’s personality & traits & all of the great qualities that made Aaliyah Aaliyah (Interactions w/ family & friends, style in clothes, dance moves, etc.) I have faith in Keshia Chante & I know for a fact she will do a GREAT job on the movie. I want a statement from Blackground Records & the Haughtons to see what’s really going to happen. I understand that the Haughtons want to let Aaliyah rest in peace & keep her out of the media (Myspace, Facebook, YouTube, TV, etc.) but I hope around August 25th of this year they will release a statement & say what’s really going to happen. Y’all should NOT worry about Keshia singing b/c she will NOT sing in the biopic b/c it’s supposed to have a Selena-type vibe, so they’re gonna have Aaliyah’s music in the movie b/c that is the only way Aaliyah can be physically apart of the movie but I’m pretty sure Keshia will have a song or two on the soundtrack. I glad that she is finally getting the recognition that she deserves. Aaliyah was one of hip hop’s prized treasures and we need to remember as the angel she was!!! The minute I saw Keisha I thought, WOW – she could play Aaliyah. Who are these people that look “exactly” like Aaliyah? I don’t think the point is that they look just like her. Everyone all of a sudden has a sister or cousin who looks and sings like Aaliyah. No one knows what went on behind the scenes in regards to picking Keisha. She was chosen by people who worked work Aaliyah and knew her well. To me, that says a lot more than a stranger with no ties.

I think this is a good and bad idea because you never know what this Aaliyah look alike is gonna be like! Fans might think it’s an insult to her memory! But this girl will give it her best to make Aaliyahs memory live on forever! Its a good idea because the people who have NEVER heard of Aaliyah (in particular my friends who say she’s rubbish as no one has heard of her!? what the hell is wrong with them?)
