Common x The Corner. Common just announced the launch of the first national online book club for teens which he is calling The Corner. The goal is to help motivate young teens to sharpen their minds, read a book and be able to discuss it in an open forum. Official press release states:
Each month, The Corner educational team chooses a book-of-the-month that conveys messages of tolerance, compassion and non-violent expressions of achieving social justice. Through lively discussions about the world of books through “Let’s Talk,” The Corner book club blog, members are encouraged to discuss, debate, critique, and comment on the selected material.
The official Corner website, will also feature celebrity guests who will share their favorite books and stories with the members of the book club. This is a good look for Common. He continues to be a positive online influence when hip-hop is now more known for their online beefs.

This is about the dumbest idea I've heard in a while. It's a noble cause, but ill conceived. You can distract little kids and get them to read by withholding access to other activities but once they're old enough to make their own choices, they will not read. Internet or read? What do you think kids will choose?
No disrespect but that was a short-sighted statement, in my humble opinion. I have a 14 yr old and she loves to read and her friends love to read. You said “internet or read”; this venture incorporates both facets of media eg: “online book club”. Children need more than just myspace or youtube or 106 & park. Even if it doesnt work atleast he gave it a try, you may be surprised give our youth more credit.
what if im reading on the internet?
Is that Amazon kindle reading a book or reading on the internet? So confused. SIGH. Technology. what a bitch. But thank GOD for internet porn!
It's not meant to be an all encompassing statement, but I think we overestimate how much potential people have sometimes. I'm one that believes most of the world is stupid. Just look at the comments on this website. Yours is one of the more articulate ones. As people we'd rather gab about something short and sweet like this news snippet than about a whole book.
I can see where you're coming from. Its sad really.
I suggest starting a Beer of the Month Club so we can combine pleasure and reading. This would be an awesome combination: imagine every member suggesting a book and a brand of beer.
