Common x The Green Lantern. Last year Hollywood was filled with the rumors that Common and Tyrese were both front runners to play The Justice League superhero The Green Lantern in Warner Bros. upcoming movie. Well now word on the street is that Common has officially been ruled out for the upcoming Green Lantern movie which is slated for a Dec. 17, 2010 release and will be directed by Martin Campbell who directed the 007 film Casino Royale.
The reason why Common is officially out? At first Warner Brothers was looking into developing the script around John Stewart, who was the African-American Green Lantern. But after a series of production issues and script rewrites, the movie will be focused on Hal Jordan, who is Caucasian. Word is Chris Pine who will be starring in the upcoming Star Trek movie is the new frontrunner to play the role of Jordan. And there you have it. At least all you Common lovers can see him in the upcoming Terminator: Salvation.
THis is pissing me off. Yea Hal Jordan is more well known but they had the chance to take this to the next level with John Stewart. I wouldnt have cared if it was Common or Tyrese or Steve Urkel for that matter. Chris Pine? Who the F&&CK is that?!
Hal Greer was a nerd that brought no validility to the role of green latern. That’s why he was replaced by a black green latern and just because Hal is the first green latern, doesn’t mean he’s the best. I believe that Common could have brought real recognition to this role but as usual these so call writers and producer vision is total different from what the reality of the role should be. These so call intellecuals mess it up with their one sided view of how the role should be cast and played. I know a lot people, who were happy and inspired to see Common cast in this role. This means that now there are no other superhero or comic strip roles out there that can bring the enthusiam or excitement that would interest Black Actors to play. So because hollywood has a tainted view of black actors and there importance to play such a pivatol roles in these times, then I think that (and this is must be a personal decision from people of color) theres no way I’m spending my hard earn money going to see or purchase the DVD of these types of movie when I’ll have the opportunity to see them on the nearest cable or satellite channel in about 2-3 months from their release date. Oh. P.S. the trailer stinks and they said that the had a problem with Commons acting!!!!!!!!!!! Now; (You’s) really got the last laugh. HHHHHaaaaa: Ha.. Idiots!

Ok really? Does this REally surprise any of you who actually know hollywood? Of course it is all about the money! And half the DC crazy fans dont want to see John Stewart or common, they want the real Green Lantern, Hal Jordan.
I can't believe you people are upset. First of all, that atrocity that was George Millers “Justice League” was basically a rush job to get a tentpole film out before the strike. Which is why Common was even considered because his quota is tiny. Secondly, this is a Green Lantern origin movie…Hal was the first “real” Green Lantern on Earth and if you knew that, then you can't possibly argue for John Stewart to be the feature character. Not to mention we barely know anything about his origin as Green Lantern…Hal was the obvious choice.
I'm not upset. In fact I agree with you. I am a big supporter of Common and think if he has the decent acting chops and more lines then Wanted and Street Kings he could pull off John Stewart but I agree Green Lantern origins story then you gotta go all Hal Jordan

I agree with you as well. It's not a matter of race or about Common…it's about the origins of Green Lantern which for the fans has to start with Hal Jordan.
I still don't think this movie will ever come out. You can't make a Justice League movie without Batman and Superman. Fans know Christian Bale and Brandon Routhe and those two characters and neither will likely be part of a new Justice league movie. And if they try to recast they will piss a lot of people off.
Common ain't no A list actor. Period.

That's fucked up to change the character from black to white why for obvious reasond. But in my opinion if anyone pays close attention to the recent cartoon Justice League you would be able to see that the Green Latern as John Stewart brings more character to the Justice League and depth plus it brings more realism. OK, so someone here needs to learn their comics history. Especially superheroes in film. Justice said “there was finally ONE black super hero ‘, come on Blade is a marvel comic property, he has three movies to his credit. and let’s not forget WarMachines inclusion in the next Iron Man film Jim Rhodes sure ain’t caucasion. I’m all for equal time, but the coloring of certain propertires is Bulls**t. Jim West, the Honeymooners, etc. I’ve always said if you don’t like the way things are, it’s better just to sit and bitch about them than actually try to change anything. first off actually…hal jordan wasn’t the first green lantern…he is the better known lantern.
Alan scott was the first green lantern..but he was the golden age lantern..so most people dont count him
Marvel has always given non whites and women play in their comics and movies. The examples of Blade, War Machine, Storm etc. are great. Marvel handles diversity well.
DC however, seems to have problems. It’s not like they don’t try, but those attempts just highlight how out of touch they are. They had Steel (which was camp) and messed up with CatWoman. They just don’t know how and when to leverage diversity.
John Stewart is an example of a missed opportunity. He’s a big league character that has been in the comics for decades. Comics already have more than one Green Lantern and they should have been able to work it out over time. Maybe not the first film but certainly in the follow ups. With this much fan dialogue about multiple Green Lanterns you can bet Marvel would have found a way to make money on all of them. DC takes a high class problem of having too many characters that fans like and just makes it a problem,
They will probably mess up the fact people like both Hawkman and Hawkgirl when looking at those that film and they have yet to pull of something for Wonder Woman if films. same to be having the same problem with women. People might not be nearly has upset if they had not done such a great job with the Justice League series. They really made it all come together in TV, but they can’t seem to translate that positive thrust to the movies in general.
Batman is their big success and that was done by letting someone with great vision do what was necessary to bring it to the screen. They have not duplicated that type of success with other DC characters. One thing is obvious, while Marvel capitalizes on diversity over the next few years, DC’s “single character type” in the movies will begin to stand out and not in a good way.
true the original green lantern, on earth, was Hal Jordan. But i believe more people liked John Stewart more. And personally, i’m used to watching the Justice League with John Stewart. Hal Jordan is boring! John Stewart made the Green Lantern sweet! Plus, i think Common’s swag would have added to the character. I understand that many other DC fans want to see the original GL, but at the end of the day in hollywood, it’s about money…
some things we all must remember. yes hal jordan was the first GL, but the best GL and the one everybody wants to see is John Stewart. so if they do things the right way they will start out with hal jordan and in the next one bring in John Stewart because he’s the best he’s the one everybody wants to see including the powers that be (White America).
It is confirmed that Green lantern is gonna be played by Ryan Renolds annd Blake Lively will play Carol Ferris.
