New marketing ideas are rare in hip-hop these days but of course innovator Mos Def is bringing the creativity to the marketing campaign of his current album “The Ecstatic.” The album has already been released but in a new twist Mos Def has partnered with clothing company LnA which owns the Invisible DJ Music Tee to further push the album.
Basically, Mos Def’s next album will literally be sold through a t-shirt. The shirt will have “The Ecstatic” album cover on the front, track listing on the back and will include a special download code to download the entire album. Buy the shirt…get the album. Crazy thing is according to HipHopDX, SoundScan is going to count the t-shirt as an album sale. Sounds pretty cool…unless the shirt is ridiculously expensive.

I love the idea – its something new for hiphop. Better than selling vs. traditional online ways which they already did for this album. Look – you even get added publicity

[...] Mos Def has partnered with clothing company LnA to develop a line of shirts to promote his new album The Ecstatic. Each shirt features an album cover on the front and a track list with a special download code on the back. If you buy the shirt, you get the album for free. SoundScan has even agreed to count the shirt as an album sale. Not a bad deal for a twofer (as long as the shirt is reasonably priced that is). Although, for the record, I prefer Trent Reznor’s free model. [Woooha] [...]

THE MIGHTY MIGHTY MOS DEF. Keep grindin brother.
I think its a great idea. It’s just another way and another method to get it out there
Insane, IN-SANE. can’t wait for it to hit. online media and it’s channels of distribution need things like this to cut through the jaundice of currently established trends.
the lazy forms that have persisted for years and years now can’t get enough of this, even though it may or may not be too late.

Great idea, made even better when I realised that the t-shirt wouldn’t actually be playing the music. Perhaps that’s a consideration for the future though? Like those novelty ties and socks you get at Christmas.
