Business site Crain’s New York has the drop that Marc Ecko’s once dominant urban clothing empire is now in financial despair. Although his Complex Magazine and online continues to be a strong voice in urban lifestyle, Ecko’s actual stores and property are a different story.

The report states that Ecko‚Äôs office space, which includes a basketball court and is over 275,000 square feet, costs a whopping $9 million a year to operate is now on the market to free up cash flow. Crain‚Äôs also states that Marc Ecko Enterprises is doing whatever it can to pay off its rising debt due to lack of sales during the tough economy. This includes the selling of Ecko’s watch trademark to Timex last month and the relinquishment of¬† his Avirex brand to Kids Headquarters.

Add in the fact that the Ecko brand is not as “cool” as it once and you have the potential for near financial disaster. Hopefully Ecko can bounce back as his rags to riches business story is an inspiration to many in the urban fashion industry.
