We have exclusive word straight from the folks at HP about what makes the upcoming Dr. Dre HP Envy laptop so freakin’ special. The most obvious difference is the all black matte casing with the glowing Dr. Dre “Beats” logo on the top…Yea. Hell Yea… but it doesn’t take a computer genius to see that difference. What will make the Dr. Dre x HP Envy so special in which they declare as the “Mac killer” is not just the sleek design but true to Dr. Dre style…it’s all about the sound. The HP Envy will be the first laptop to feature a “cutting-edge” sound system designed by Dr. Dre’s sound engineers labeled “Beats Audio.” The “Beats Audio” sound software was developed by the same folks that engineer Dre’s tracks and also helped design the Beats by Dre headphone line.
According to HP, Dre has developed “…a unique, high-performance audio software solution. Available exclusively on the HP Envy, Beats Audio offers users playing music or audio through headphones or external speakers the optimal sound experience – the way the artist intended it.”
HP would not give us any further details at this time about the Beats Audio software but did mention for us (and our readers) to be on the lookout for more information as the HP Envy and the Dr. Dre Edition hit stores on October 18th with prices starting at a very Mac-like $1,699 and up. Rumors that the Dr. Dre edition will include the Beats by Dre headphones were neither confirmed or denied. More info. to come. More pics after the jump…

Click button is maybe the worst ever… I like to hover my hand over the click button while I’m moving on the mousepad, but I can’t because the click button is a part of the mousepad. Only other complaint is that the left side of the laptop under the keyboard gets extremely hot because the motherboard is right there working so damn hard no matter what you do.
But, Beats Audio does sound dope as fuck to all those haters out there. Really, its the best sounding laptop I’ve ever heard, Dr. Dre is a genius. Overall, this laptop is fucking sweet only a few small problems…
Your an ass
You are a fag homothug.
hpd5 can it have beats audio?
…nothing you idiot. Dr. Dre’s dead, he’s locked in my basement!”
lol hahahah YES!!!!
You guys are are too easy to fall for such marketed products. How so?
If the Beats Audio sound card is good, why does the Beats Audio webpage have no specifications about it? The consumer has absolutely no knowledge of what exactly it is. For all you know, it could be a regular sound card with Dr. Dre’s name on it and advertised to do as it does, am I right? Prove me wrong.
Also about the Beats Audio, the software is nothing more than just an applied system-wide sound equalizer. Engadget did an extensive audio test with the Beats Audio and the conclusion was that it was exactly just a treble and bass equalizer boost. You can have the exact same effect on any popular media player with the built-in equalizer. If you need the system-wide audio enhancements, why not go for the more widely used SRS or BBE sound enhancements? Those offer sooo many more audio enhancement options than the Beats Audio and are and can even put out the same bass and treble boosts as the Beats Audio software does if you choose to do so.
The audio stations at Best Buy are catered for initial impressions. For all you know, the Bose headphones could sound just as good as the Beats headphones at your home set-up, could they not? You only briefly listened to them for less than 5 minutes did you not? A 5-minute custom-tailored demo means nothing if you’re comparing the audio quality of headphones. You cannot possibly compare a 5-minute listen to the Bose’s audio station (mostly slow, acoustic-based tracks) with a 5-minute listen to the Beats audio station (mostly fast-paced, bass-boosted hip hop and pop tracks). A real headphone comparison would have the same tracks playing so you can directly compare how the headphones present the sounds. For those who say the Beats are better than Bose, why don’t you list any specific examples of how they’re better. Simply stating that headphone “X” is better than headphone “Y” doesn’t say anything meaningful. I could claim that the packaged iPhone earphones sound way better than any of the Beats headphones. Would you believe me if I said that statement without any evidence as to why they’re better? I challenge you to give me one example if you can.
Why don’t you guys try real headphones instead? More music artists use AKG, Shure, Sennheiser, and Audio Technica products than the limited list of the ones who use the Beats products (even if you just compare the list of one of those companies to the Monster Beats’ list). Maybe it’s because those other companies actually have quality sound designed to match the needs of audio mixing, studio monitoring, and track mastering? You can’t compare the Beats to the quality offered by those other companies.
For 1/6th of the price, I would rather listen to my Sennheiser CX300′s over the Beats Tours which offer the same audio clarity; or at the same price of the Studios, my incredibly detailed high and mid ranged Shure SRH940 headphones. For a fraction of the price, I would rather spend my money on a dedicated digital-audio-converter from a reputable brand such as HiFiMAN or FiiO or HeadRoom than the spec-less Beats Audio system.
If you don’t believe me, go ahead and continue to purchase your over-priced Beats products, it’s not my money going down the drain. Prove to me otherwise that the Beats can seriously compete with other reputable audio brands.
lol its true its jsut a regular sound card, i had a custom 700$ gaming laptop that came with a cheap 30$ realtek sound car thatr had its own eq and sound board to up the bass turn trebble down mid highs the whole 9 yards. you niggers are fucking stupid if you think your rap lord and savior dr dre is giving you the best tech here ever.
you should put it up for download like a trial and or someone should just be able to buy the software itself so you would be making money and people can try your product and or buy it, so it would be win-win not win-lose =)
well i read that its not just the software but the components as well that increase the quality of the sound, so they cant just give out free demos and downloads cuz its meant to work with the specific components.
Wow – Dr. Dre probably personally coded the audio driver and designed the d/a converters on the motherboard.
No. All he provided was a symbol. The real work was done by those who actually possess a brain.
So you actually think Dr. Dre doesn’t have a brain? Have you tried doing what he does? He may not have the knowledge to code the drivers, but his knowledge of music and rythym is brilliant. Before you try bashing people online (like if they care), actually think about what you’re saying.
You are a smart man, Congrats on not being a complete Dumb Ass like most of the people commenting on this page
THE ABOVE WAS TO JAY BTW
O really? He did nothing right? We’re talking Dr. Dre here people. The guy who brought you The Chronic. The guy who brought you Eminem. The guy who brought you the excellent line of headphones. The studio king. The “awesome beat maker” (eminem reference for all you retards). This fat punk just talks like a big guy because you can be one on the internet without actually having any nuts. D-bag.
Oh, and yes, I’ll necro-post if what the guy says ticks me off enough.
you guys dont get it. Dr.Dre doesn’t support fake. over the years dre has been makin music. do you really think he’d put something out that would collapse his image as a mastermind behind music? seriously now, even if he didnt make the shit if he’s sportin it it must be worth a look
what about dr pepper commercials. dre was a g. now he s makin the g s
i have no clue on how to use the beats audio?
I’m a Producer and have used both Mac and PC. I will have to wait till BeatsAudio by HP been out for like a year before considering it .i have a HP currently and running Ableton Live and i love it……………..but it seems like the oldest trick in the book to keep making new so called better/Trendier software with not much new but cosmetics ,that always requires a new computer to run it like every 3 years and you have to ask yourself when am I ever gonna satisfied? and seriously what is so groundbreaking about this software and system it will have to prove its self and not just have a glossy trendy packaging! i’m still stretching my current system/software and still coming up creativly with new ideas!
your name isnt Lorin is it???
I doubt he is Bassnectar
I doubt he is Bassnectar
It might be a sweet looking laptop , but there is no way I would even consider paying that kinda coin for a windows laptop . Windows 7 is alot better than I thought it would be , but for the money , I’d take a MAC anytime !!
I hear that..mac all day baby!
ALTERNATE OPTION:
use the laptop you have now
buy THIS for $99

better sound, without paying for the “Beats” image
Iis beats audio a beat maker?
This sound card is way better than “Beats Audio”, and I’m sure you’ll agree it’s significantly cheaper:

I’m just wondering… Would I still need an external soundcard w/2 outputs to DL live w/Ableton??? If so… What’s the point??? I love and respect Dre and all he does but for that price I could buy a cheaper laptop and kick-ass external soundcard w/ moe I/O and be able to record, perform, etc…

Great Question! To me that’s the selling point, however I have been looking for that answer for a while and haven’t come across it so assume NO is the answer to that!
I was going to buy Dre’s headphones a couple months ago at the Apple store because I did figure they would be sounding good. But now that I see he’s working with HP. I’m saying it’s a good thing I didn’t buy the headphones.
Wow… so you are stating that, because it’s not an Apple exclusive product, it’s not worth your while… Ohhh… I get it, you work for Steve Jobs…. i am so embarrassed, my mistake… didn’t realize you were an apple employee restricted solely to representation and utilization of Apple only products. Too bad they don’t make the air we breathe, those darn plants have monopoly on it. But Steve will figure it out… but, please continue on with your pontification…
Yeah man.
Apple makes the best products that consistenly work well. If you cant afford them thats cool, but dont hate on people that would rather spend extra money for far more superior products.
The only people who hate apple are the one who cant afford it…
Sorry to say but HP sucks
and by just giving it a name of DRE it wont do any good
its just the headphones that is giving u the o/p because everything inside is same
and yah one more thing
APPLE IS THE best(i say it after using 12 differenet laptops form almost all the brands)
use it to prove it otherwise dont comment
good for u that they wont make the air we breath because u wont be able to afford it too hahaha
Yep. HP products suck. I have an HP printer that is a true testament to that.
HP/Apple……..Who care Dr. Dre is da shiznit boyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!
haha… which has absolutely nothing to do with headphones… lmao
DOSE THIS NEW LAPTOP RECORD LIKE THE MAC AND DOSE IT HAVE AUTOTUNE?
how much does that laptop cost?
Hope this is better quality than the headphones.
Mine broke twice and theres a ton of bad complaints on the net.
Seriously. 300$ headphones should last awhile.
[...] headphone manufacturer Monster and then the recently announced partnership with HP to create “Beats Audio”, a new high performance audio software which will debut on the limited edition HP [...]
The only people hatin’ on this are the ones who can’t afford it. Stop being so poor and get the laptop. Dre has been making the best audio products for years and he knows what hes doing. Get a job, sheesh. Oh yeah, APPLE SUCKS BALLS.
The next time you have a thought, keep it to yourself! Thanks (from the rest of the world)
“best audio products for years” where did you come up with that? If that were true, all musicians of all kinds would be flocking to get one of these wouldn’t they? Uh, no.
Why don’t you try real headphones instead? Have y’all tried beatsaudio with Fedora Linux? Sounds good BUT the subwoofer on HP Laptops is damn quiet — ie. no sound at all. Do sum abt that and get us the drivers for we Linux enthusiast…Its ok doe
Apple sucks balls.. ANDROID RULES. And dr. Dre’s products probly are the shit, but for that much money you could get cheaper stuff that sounds way better. And lasts longer. Cause thosr dre. Headphone are nimble than a bitch. U gotta b extra carefull or they will break ina heartbeat
Way To Be Ignant, you mean ignorant? No I’m speaking like you)

Dr. Dre beats products are a joke. His headphones are absolute crap. Ask any REAL audiophile and they’ll tell you the same thing: absolute crap. And now he’s personally “engineered” this thing? How? By tweaking the EQ settings? LOL the producers already do that when they’re producing the music and then your headphones / speakers have their own sound signature which alters the sound yet again. So tell me, how can you possibly hear the music as it was intended if your computer changes the EQ settings and then your headphones change the sound signature yet again? LOL bullshit.
Yup, what he said. I doubt that software and hardware will beat reason, logic , record or pro tools and a mid priced audio interface. That beats shit is a joke. Even the headphones, get some dt-880 pros and see what I’m saying. No real producer will use this garbage and be proud and say it. Dr dre doesn’t even use that junk he promotes honestly. How can you use this over a million dollar setup.
Soooo, does this come with a recording software?
wow you all are haters that leave rude ass coments! think if you made something and every body hated on your new invention!!!! so dr. dre i thinx your labtop is the illest one ev!
Wow, U guys are dopes payin that much money for a soundcard. No matter how you slice it, a hp is still a hp and a pc is still a pc. Now you got fools payin a mac price for a hp? No thanks. I’ll just buy an Imac and run Windows 7 on that when I need it, considering that a Mac runs Windows better than a PC does.
That’s the most stupid reply I’ve ever read in my whole life: A mac run Win 7 better than a PC!!! As far as I see, the only difference between a mac and a “PC” is the Operative System.
Since the Envy first was released, I wanted it. I am loyal(for some reason) to HP and was willing to shell out the money for a high-end computer with an external hard drive. Before taking a trip to New York from Philly to B&H I decided to pay a visit to my local staples. I found the Envy 14, I was excited, and now two days later, I am blown away with the sound on this thing. I have a pair of twenty dollar JVC headphones that mixed with the Beats Audio makes all my music so, so much better. I am still looking to see how I can use this thing more. The only thing I have a problem is the track pad. All in all it’s pretty good, but the two finger scroll sucks and I’ve tried to use it, but instead I’m using an external mouse.Other than that, I love this fricken thing.

Your paying for the name with this one. The only thing special about beats audio is it has a nice sound card for a laptop and compresses your audio to make the bass thump way harder than it should. If you people knew anything about good sound you wouldn’t be listening to mp3′s or mp4′s they cut out frequencies above 16 kilohertz and are only 1/10th the quality of a Cd at its highest form of 320k(notice how much smaller the file size than a cd type WAV file?) thats the FIRST, MOST IMPORTANT thing you can do to make your listening experience better!!!(THAT MEANS BUY CD’S). Trust that this is not the way Dre listens to his music, and you should not unless your not right in the head. want similar BEATS AUDIO compression without buying a new lap-top? try ( http://www.dpsplugin.com/trial.php ) you want to listen to your music the right way? buy an out-board Digital to Audio Converter DAC something with high bit and sample rate, look for numbers like 24-bit 192k with USB or Fire-wire connectivity.
The next thing you should purchase are high end speakers or studio monitors such as Genelec, which wont fatigue your ears either. The 3rd thing you should worry about is the type of room your listening in, certain types of frequencies build up in an area for low end you need bass traps and the like. Its not just about having the loudest thump possible remember that!
Jeff… Shut the fuck up. You come on here downin everyone that doesnt like apple shit, callin them poor. Maybe its because only snobs and faggots buy apple shit cause its no better than anything on the market. As for the Iphone. It gets outsold 20 to 1 and its the same price as top of the line androids. Your an apple fanboy that probably sucked a fat dick to get your overpriced fagtop. Eat shit, die slow, im out… Peace
Lol
HP=The new throw away computer
Mac=leader of the industry in durability, longevity, & ingenuity.
Beats Heaphones by Dr. Dre= Best money I’ve spent yet for a pair of headphones, yes even my Shure in-ear E5′s
Beats Audio= disappointment that it’s limited to a throw away, but I’m guessing it won’t compare to Ableton Live.
All of this is a matter of opinion, so I will continue to listening to some dope beats on my Mac, that were created with Ableton Live, and sound incredible with my Beats by Dre headphones.
Holla atcha your boyyyy!!!
Well you know Dre has been in the game
a long time and his name alone says a
whole lot. so im excited to see what this is all about i have been looking for a music studio program fo a few years now and nothing has lived up to my
expectations…. how can i be down where can i purchase this at ????
have to agre with you all on that, hp makes shitty pc and being the owner a an hp pc now for a few yrs i will never buy 1 again, absolute crap!!!!!!!!!!! this whole thing with dre is hes making money for his name, hp is trying to make a come back having once been the leader in the market to now being known for selling garbage. dre dont give a fcuk he’s makin money, just for his name. dre is a naster at what he does, ever since the 80′s (nwa)the problem is all the younger gernerations from the 90;s and millenium era are the people who are going to feed hp’s pocket, dre’s name has been around far to long to be runied especially especilly by a company who make computers NOT MUSIC!
I think all of Dr. Dre’s products are great but I like his headphones best
Im a Trained music sound engineer and the argument of rather Dr Dre’s products are the best is all relevent to what you use them for. in any given studio there will be 3 or 4 diffrent types of headphones. to mix a song i would never use Beats beacuase the sound isn’t flat enough to get a proper mix however i wouldn’t wanna listen to a finished song on my mixing headphones because of that reason the sound is to flat and is not anything like real world listneng such as a car or home stereo thats where Dr Dre’s Products are the best to use
Can u download this program seperately if u didnt get the computer.. Lookin 4 a beat program
Well it seems obvious to me that the only thing that makes this laptop $1600 is the big “b” logo on the front. I have used many software sequencers and this one is no better than Sony Acid (witch is on the low end but inexpensive end). Also the sound card is no better than any other built in laptop sound card. It doesn’t even have native support for ASIO so good luck trying to record anything with it. You could buy an Acer Aspire from newegg.com for less with much better hardware and pick up a copy of Fruity Loops and a decent audio interface that will actually let you record in and playback audio in DVD quality for less than that POS that can only be sold to ignorant people that know nothing about computers and trust too much in Dr. Dre’s name. Then again you don’t have to trust me you can buy it yourself and find out that if you want to be serious about making beats and recording vocals that you will need another $300 – $500 of software and hardware to do what you want to do.
I’m not bashing on Dre but just throwing out a warning that if you want to be serious about making music you should look at different sequencer programs and compare how much hardware you get for your dollar before you decide to pick this thing up.
Ok,
This entire thread is just wrong in so many ways. There are a number of comments that do hold true nonetheless. These are the comments that appear to come from people who actually make music or act as mixing engineer. So here it is. I am a professional mix engineer who has worked on a significant number of projects.
Making computer music or (ITB – In the box) is only partly about the computer. You do not make music using beats by dre. Music is composed using a digital audio workstation of DAW. You may of heard of some of them – Logic, Sonar, Protools, Live etc.. What is important when making music on a computer is the components. You need at least 4gb ram for decent 24bit processing. If you want to utilise some of the new 64 bit software packages you can go a little further than 4gb otherwise it’s pointless. The next component which is probably the most important is your sound card. I think from what i have read this is what the dre audio appears to be. Fundamentally the best audio soundcards wether external such as the Apogee interfaces or internal are best sourced independantly. Some of them cost more than this laptop in whole. Think about that for a moment. Second from quality is I/O. How can i hook up a number of independant chains from my rack without enough I/O? what about a standard output L/R for my monitors? If you want to make music propoerly you will still need to invest. I have not seen enough about this laptop to understand what it’s about but at this time i’m not a buyer.
Now second point – I am an audiophile and the headphones are fantastic despite some of the comments i have read here. They work as fantastic HI-FI headphones. The quality is outstanding and you can clearly hear the low end including those sub 40 htz sub freq. So stop hating. If on the other hand you are looking for flat response headphones for music this is not the choice to make. In the same respect if you said to me i just purchased a 50,000 dollar home hi fi speaker set up i would say the same. Monitoring is all about flat response. Most of you would probably not enjoy this listening experience it’s a tool and nothing more. Don’t gat carried away with branding and purpose. Understand the difference. Any serious musician knows that you can make good ITB production and even mixdown the track with some decent software on either mac or PC. for what it’s worth i own a MAC BOOK PRO for my portable set up with live and logic. My home set up is an openlabs miko which is running protools and live. I think both are fantastic. I do however have great audio interfaces for both and a host of third party Vst’s. Stop talking shite on these forums and learn something about making music if you’re really interested.
I cant beleive how many people comment on stuff without having a clue of what they are saying. What value are you adding?
WHY Y’ALL SAYING NASTY THINGS ABOUT THE BEAT? DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I FUCKING LIKE THIS SHIIT… FOR YA INFORMATION I’M BADLY IN NEED OF THE LAPTOP. I WISH I GOT MONEY TO PURCHASE…..
I THINK IT’S GREAT AND I LOVE I SWEAR TO GOD.
just got a new envy beats PC. contrary to what people on here say, its not $1600..i got mine for half that. after comparing to other computers i found the mac to be the only one similar in terms of looks, features and build quality. a similarly spec’d out mac wouldve cost double to triple. no doubt macs are cool, but you pay a hefty premium for them.
as for the ‘beats’ portion. its a software program built into the PC that enhances mp3′s and the sound. its NOT the speakers built into the laptop. the speakers are ok, better than most actually. but when connecting to high quality headphones or speakers you DO hear the difference.
and as for people complaining about the quality of HP’s products…from what ive heard, most hp products are outsourced to other vendors. the ENVY’s are the only ones that HP makes themselves so the build quality is outstanding. i have no complaints with mine. its very solid.
Laptop for music. I LOVE IT.
beats Headphones are important for this to work.
Just got mine and compared to mac this thing beats it hands down on everything so far. It has 192kHz samplerate and playback right out the box. Pro Tools 9 is nice on this. So far with FL 10 and a keyboard I’ve managed to make some nice stuff. Still haven’t personalized it yet but as of now mac has a serious competitor.
it is so cool if i could got this laptop~
I have had two (2) HP laptops now, both dv7s. My current one has the Beats Audio and I must say that it is a disappointment; for a laptop marketing its audio capabilities or any other for that matter. Besides sounding mediocre, at best, some of the keys vibrate loudly enough to destroy the experience. The bass notes are not in the least prominent. Major, major disappointment. My previous laptop had an Altec Lansing speaker setup and it was not bad at all. Actually, it sounded great for a laptop.
Conclusion-
Beats Audio – Average at best
Altec Lansing hardware setup – Above average
Look. I tried beats by dr. dre headphones. They were excellent quality. But to be truly honest, they were just glorified Bose headsets. If you compare the beats by dr. dre headset studio edition ($400) with Bose, you can get a comprable Bose headset for $150. I tried them both at BestBuy. Same quality, different price.
As far as putting beats by dr. dre in a laptop, HP really sucks at this. I like HP laptops. But why would you put such a good sound system in a crappy computer? core i3s and i5s are crappy. You cannot find this soundcard in core i7s.
It’s like serving fillet mignon on a garbage can lid. The sound quality is excellent, but it is contained in a machine that only those not skilled in what to look for in a computer will pay for.
Put beats by dr. dre in a laptop with an i7 and a dedicated video card – and you have me sold.
@DJSlash
My laptop, hp of course, with beats audio has a solid i7 (2630QM) and a dedicated video card which is pretty darn powerful (HD6770m). DV6 in case you are sold
every body stop being DI C K S !!! the laptop looks sweet bt with a minor erros thas all so either you buy it n suk it o shut the fuk up TY
Obviously the vast majority of these comments were posted by teen / 20 something simpletons who believe that because a simian, alleged musician aligns his name with a product it makes it technically superior. If you dolts knew anything at all about audio processing you would know that less is more. The less you process the signal the more faithful it is to the way it was recorded. Microsoft has never learned this, hence the reason they continue to use the Direct Sound interface. Between DS and Beats you wind up with a completely muddy synthetic signal that was once pure. If you seek a true signal reproduction on the HP laptops, unload the the Beats driver install the generic Microsoft driver. Bypass Direct Sound using the ASIO driver found in ASIO for all.
WHY DON’T ALL STOP THE BS DR DRE SOUND CARD IS FAKE, AND YES HE ONLY MAKE MUSIC NOT SOUND CARD THEY USING HIS NAM E FOR THE MARKET WHO EVER FALL FOR THAT YOU GUYS ARE SUCKERS THE BEST FOR MUSIC IS MAC SORRY GUYS PLS DON’T BE MAD AT ME FOR SAYING THAT BUT ITS TRUE.
OK beats by dre is only good SPEAKERS!!! the soundcard makes no difference because really you produce music on a laptop?? you consider yourself a producer??? and fyi MAC is lame too if you guys want to produce music BUY A STUDIO!!!!
