No matter what you might hear in the press, those in the film industry know that Michael Jackson’s This Is It has flat out failed to live up to all the hype. Sony Pictures had been lowering their internal box office projections all last week in preparation for any potential backlash that it would be a bomb. Although far from a box office bomb, This Is It was projected to make $35 million in the U.S. from last Wednesday to Sunday (yesterday). Instead, the film is coming in at $32.5 million for the five day weekend and only made $21.3 million Friday through Sunday. To put this in perspective, Miley Cyrus’ concert movie Best of Both Worlds did better with a $31.1 million three day weekend number. Yes Miley Cyrus beat out the King of Pop.
Sony will continue to hype the film up as a global success though and as we all expected (and as WoooHa predicted) they will be expanding the screenings beyond the “exclusive” two week period to offer everyone a chance to see the movie. No surprise there but everyone here in Hollywood knows it’s because Sony needs all the money the can out of this one.

Regardless of how well it does I loved the movie and people were dancing in their seats at my theater which was packed.
I for one, enjoyed the film. It was great to see Michael (if it was him the whole time, his father claims there are body doubles in the film) for the last time. I cant wait to see it again. Im trying to see it again this week, Im buying a Blu Ray DVD player just because of this movie. A must see for every Michael Jackson fan
Saw This Is It for the 3rd time yesterday. Really enjoyed it, even my husband, a Professional Engineer, a workaholic, not a true MJ fan, enjoyed it. The three shows were packed in our cinema. I’m from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I will buy the Blue Ray when its available. Already bought the This Is It album, the orchestra version of the song, is really good. All the songs are good. I also ordered the MJ Opus book which will arrive in time for xmas.
I agree with all of you. I saw it this weekend too and loved it. Wish we could have seen the full Thriller and Smooth Criminal performances. They looked amazing. I think Sony was just shooting themselves in the foot though with the over-hyping of the two week exclusive. We all knew they were going to extend it.
F*ck the comparison with Miley Cyrus. She had a full show and this is rehearsals.
The movie made over 106 million worldwide in 5 days!! That’s 21 million a day suckers!!!
Leave Michael alone!!
On another note, here’s an interview with Kenny the show’s director and the DVD will have 3 hours more footage. Yeah baby!!
