The future of the ultimate hip-hop businessman is also….a painter? Pharrell has been doing some major publicity lately (see NY Times interview) but not for N.E.R.D. or a new album he’s producing. Instead, Skateboard P has been pushing his involvement as an actual artist to the point where he even graces the latest issue of “Modern Painters.” Nice to see Pharrell doing some thing unique and interesting with his spare time.

I guess Pharrell and Swiss Beats are taking notes from Dennis Hopper and Billie Dee Williams. Take note, Billie Dee was an established painter before he was an actor. Jay-Z has been supporting artists since his Reasonable Doubt days.
I’ve always been fascinated in the relationship of art appreciation compared to the patronage and general interest of the wealthy tastemakers. I do understand that some artists were able to “succeed” well before the tastemakers and wealthy declared them relevant.
I’m not mad at Pharrell, I wish him all the success in the art world. Who knows, he may have a collection sold at the MoMA store.
