64% of hip-hop fans prefer to watch music videos online

In our latest “WoooHa Poll of the Week” question which was “What is your favorite way to watch music videos?” The results came back as follows:

We usually cap our polls at the first 100 responses but I admit, I forgot to put the cap on and so we ended up with 101. Of the 101 responses, an astounding 64% of hip-hop fans prefer to watch their music videos on sites like YouTube and Vevo vs. the old school way on TV or even directly though an artists’ website or MySpace. One can argue the results are misleading though as consumers are “forced” into the habit of  watching videos online simply for the fact that networks like MTV don’t play videos anymore.

I say that’s a bunch of bull shoot though. We all remember the days of turning on MTV Jams WAITING for that one video…but had to watch all these other lame ones first. Sites like YouTube and Vevo solve that problem. You get what you want, when you want. Isn’t that the way of the internet generation? So what does this all mean for aspiring and current artists? Well, the power of the music video is still strong, it’s just now in digital form vs. through your TV. So get in on that music video internet game and spend the time (not necessarily the money) to differentiate your video from every other (swagger in front of a bunch of cars the cut to ladies at the club) scene.

And what about that MySpace site of yours that is collecting dust? Those days seem over as consumers go to online music video “destinations” where they can watch more than one artist and more than one genre. Too bad its still the labels that really control even the online music video distribution game….unless you are that “Pants of the Ground” guy…or Tay Zonday.

VIDEO: How Cypress Hill helps strengthen the Priority Records brand

Snoop Dogg’s recent signing of Cypress Hill to his “new” Priority Records was a shock to many in the music industry. They haven’t released an album since 2004 and in this day and age of the ever changing music industry, Cypress Hill is considered “old” by many. So why would Snoop make Cypress Hill his first signing as the Creative Chairman of Priority Records? Why not some young, flashy kid out of L.A. instead? The reason is simple.

Snoop Dogg wants to bring credibility back to the West Coast and make Priority the home of West Coast hip-hop. In order to do that, in order for younger up-and-coming talent to follow, there has to be credible artists to the roster. Cypress Hill has sold over 18 million records and they did most of it on their own with aggressive touring and branding here on the West Coast. By signing the group, Snoop and the Priority label will be able to release the much anticipated Cypress Hill album Rise Up with the creative flavor expected out of a true West Coast label. Snoop’s own Malice In Wonderland was handed off from the broken MTV distribution deal and landed in Priority’s lap when they brought Snoop on so it wasn’t like Priority was able to 100% handle that release.

Hopefully this is just a sign of more things to come from Snoop and the Priority label as they try and re-brand themselves as the “go-to” label for West Coast artists. Come on folks…we all know the West Coast…is the best coast!
