The success of The Blueprint 3 is highly credited to the marketing campaign behind it and to Jay-Z’s loyal fan base. Despite the album being leaked on the internet prior to its official release, The Blueprint 3 sold 476,000 copies in its first week of sales. The achievement help Jay-Z pass Elvis Presley to become the second artist with more No.1 albums in the 50 year history of the Billboard 200. The second week of sales resulted in 301,000 copies being sold dominating the Billboard #1 spot for two weeks straight. A month and a half later, Mr. Carter goes platinum selling nearly 1.3 million copies.

Let’s recap the blueprint to the marketing campaign that resulted in successful results. The key features to this campaign were strategic partnerships and media coverage. The release became more of an event rather than just another album on the shelf. It built anticipation and sustained momentum unlike many previous releases. To begin the buzz Jay-Z released “D.O.A” creating controversy to obtain the attention of listeners to usher in the following events.

Strategic Partnerships

Rhapsody

Jay-Z teamed up with Rhapsody® and MTV to promote the highly anticipated release of his new album, “The Blueprint 3”. As part of the partnership, the entire album will be available for fans to listen to for free on Rhapsody.com and from MTV’s “The Leak”, almost two weeks prior to its official release.

Fuse

FuseTV televised Jay-Z’s “Answer the Call” concert in Madison Square Garden in New York City. Fuse will air the concert at 9pm EST on September 11th. The event was sponsored by Absolute Vodka, Roc Nation, Live Nation, and Citi.

“ANSWER THE CALL” charity concert ticket sales and concert merchandise benefited the “New York Police and Fire Widows’ and Children’s Benefit Fund.” Airing in HD and commercial-free on the music television network FUSE, the wildly successful sold-out concert featured artists Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna, Kanye West, John Mayer, Pharrell Williams, Swizz Beatz, Kid Cudi and Memphis Bleek, and ranked among the highest-rated television programs in Fuse history.

MySpace Music and DJ Hero

Jay-Z performed at a secret show on September 10th at the Gramercy Theater on East 23rd Street in Manhattan, New York with help from MySpace Music and DJ Hero, it was announced barely 24 hours in advance, and 250 fans were given free tickets. The show was to promote the new game that also features songs from Jay-Z and Eminem.

Media Coverage

Jay-Z made high-profile appearances on HBO’s “Real Time With Bill Maher,” “Late Show With David Letterman,” BET’s “Food For Thought,” “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and performances on the MTV Video Music Awards and “The Jay Leno Show” according to publicist Jana Fleishman.

Tom Biro of MTV noted that after the VMA performance of “Empire State of Mind” the record immediately went to the #1 Top Song on iTunes for the next 6 days.

Jay-Z with Rihanna and Kayne West performed the second leading single “Run This Town” on “The Jay Leno Show” to an estimated 17.7 million viewers according to the Nielsen Company.

He also made a highly anticipated debut appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show, which builds upon their initial conversation in Brooklyn, New York’s Marcy Projects for O magazine. “The Oprah Winfrey Show” reaches 44 million people each week. And those numbers translate into big sales for the products Oprah recommends. The product placement during the shows airing generated 134,000 copies in the 3rd week of sales.

Mr. Carter also obtain media coverage from international sources making appearance on German and French television shows.

Merchandising & Touring

Jay-Z also capitalize off the merchandising for the album. He promoted the Blueprint 3 graphic tees on Myspace, Roc4Life, and on the Live Nation website. Pharrell’s clothing line Billionaire Boys Club, designed a custom graphic t-shirt in correlation with the two artist working on a track off the The Blueprint 3 titled “So Ambitious” which was made available starting September 23, 2009 on the BBC website. The 18 city tour around the U.S and Canada continues to keep the album afloat on the Billboard charts maintaining a top 10 position.

In conclusion as record labels marketing dollars decrease corporate sponsorships seem to give artist an outlet to market themselves to a different audience. As artist become brands, strategic partnerships with other companies are essential for their marketing plans. Companies benefit by finding a way to relate to their consumer and artist get to tap into different markets to obtain more listeners. Jay-Z’s marketing plan with the Blueprint 3 is a great example that demonstrates how great partnerships with other companies such as Rhapsody, Fuse, and DJ Hero can result in successful album sales. The “Answer The Call” concert also shows being philanthropic can also gain sales, you got to give to get. His recent performance at Yankee Stadium shows no limit to the corporate sponsorships he can obtain as he remains one of the biggest names in pop culture.

Lady Gaga gives the real details as to why the Fame Kills tour with Kanye West was canceled. Something about her really intrigues me…but in the way mullet haircuts and Sam Cassell’s head shape intrigue me. Although Kanye will be losing out on the tour revenue and the high margin merchandise at least he still is making money from his Glow in the Dark tour.

Kanye West x Through the Wire. Mr. West continues to dip into other revenue streams by hitting the book industry with his coffee table book “Glow in the Dark” and now the illustrated book “Through the Wire.” The concept of the book from Simon & Schuster is as follows:

This is a rare partnership between two geniuses at the top of their crafts — Kanye West, who was named “the smartest man in hip-hop” by Time magazine, and Bill Plympton, an Academy Award-nominated animator, cartoonist, and illustrator.

Through the Wire is a graphic memoir that illustrates the lyrics of twelve Kanye West songs to tell his story, from his decision to drop out of college to pursue his dreams in music, through his days spent folding chinos at the Gap while struggling at night to make a name as a producer, through the pivotal car accident that eventually set him on the course to stardom and the epiphany of realizing exactly who he had become.

Plympton illustrates each of the songs in detail, his vision of Kanye’s world. The songs are annotated with explanations of the references in the songs, biographical components that illuminate the lyrics, and their meaning on a deeply personal level.

Here is the entire short film We Were Once a Fairy Tale that Kanye West commissioned starring himself and directed by Spike Jonze (Where The Wild Things Are). The short film debuted at the Los Angeles Film Festival. Full synopsis (it can get a little strange) after the jump.

In the film, Kanye plays himself drunk at a club acting belligerent and boastful, telling starstruck club-goers that the song playing in the club is his. He wanders into a side room where he encounters a beautiful woman. They start having sex and then he passes out on her leopard print dress. When he comes to, he finds himself in the VIP room with his pants down – he was hallucinating and fucking the pillow. The realization startles him and he rushes to the bathroom where he vomits what look like rose petals.

Then it gets weird.

Kanye finds a bowie knife in the bathroom and cuts into his stomach, spilling a torrent of more petals. He digs in the knife deeper and then with his hand rips out a small furry rodent, like a demon, only its quite cute. When Kanye realizes it’s connected to him with an umbilical cord, he pulls it hard, ripping it out of him for good. He then puts the demon on the sink and hands him a tiny bowie knife to fit the critter’s scale who then uses it to commit hari kari.

Here are some look book shots of the new collection although it’s nothing new since Kanye has already worn most of these in public. But STILL no word yet on when the collection hits stores, distribution or pricing. And of course the website still has not changed.

Kanye West x Glow in the Dark. True to his word, Kanye West will be releasing a coffee table photo book centered around his Glow In The Dark tour. The hardcover book includes over 400 photos, intro from Spike Jonze and a CD with exclusive unreleased music and interviews.

The headline pretty much says it all. Everyone in the industry knew the poor ticket sales for the “Fame Kills” tour were blamed on Kanye backlash which is exactly why Lady Gaga was so quick to announce her own tour right after “Fame Kills” was canceled. Now even industry insider HITS is finally stating the obvious:

Many are attributing anemic ticket sales for the stillborn Kanye West-Lady Gaga tour to a sizable Kanye backlash following his latest embarrassment during the VMAs and to general over-exposure. Lady Gaga’s headlining tour is already generating brisk demand.

At least Kanye is enjoying his time off by eating some of that delicious Cheesecake Factory chicken. Who wants to bet that Kanye’s publicists are trying to get him a duet with Taylor Swift?

Fame kills the “Fame Kills” tour as TMZ reveals the tour has been canceled due to poor ticket sales and the fact that Lady Gaga and Kanye were butting heads on issues of production. Perhaps when you put two of music’s biggest flamboyant performers on the same tour one could predict this might happen. Regardless, Lady Gaga will be putting a smaller tour together playing at small venues while Kanye will think of the next way he can make an ass of himself.

The Coca-Cola Company, owners of Sprite, will be pushing their new Sprite Green soft drink with a strong urban campaign. Sprite Green is labeled as “the new reduced-calorie Sprite line extension, naturally sweetened, reduced, low and zero-calorie beverages sweetened with TRUVIA natural sweetener” and currently available in major markets. Sounds like the equivalent of Coke Zero. Whatever it is, the Sprite Green urban campaign launch started in a big way as it teamed up with Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music label for one of many upcoming events.

The event launched in Chicago, home of G.O.O.D. Music with performances by Common, Kid Cudi, GLC and everyone else on the label except for Kayne. Word is that Sprite Green will continue their partnership with various G.O.O.D. Music label artists as they go from coast to coast with various events and roll out the soft drink in more cities. No word yet if Kanye will be personally involved…although at the Chicago event they ironically mixed Sprite Green with Hennessey. For pics from the event head over to The Smoking Section.
