The Lee Daniels indie film Precious is getting some major buzz as it is officially endorsed by both Oprah and Tyler Perry but what intrigues us at WoooHa is how Daniels was able to transform diva Mariah Carey, who plays a life counselor,  into one ugly chick. We mean that in the most respectful way possible…in fact in an interview with the AP Mariah states the same…

“That was such a freeing experience for me,” Carey says. “By making me look so bad he brought out the ability to never be self-conscious again, and that was a gift that he gave me.” 

And check this…the experience was so freeing for Mariah that she actually let photographers take pictures of her on set from both her right AND left side. Previously, Mariah would only let photographers take her photo from the right side. No joke. I can’t make this up.

“Sometimes I like that side (her right side) — and Nick likes that side better anyway,” Mariah adds.

That’s awesome. Imagine all the other diva-like things that Mr. Carey must deal with every day but he must take it…like a man. Anyways, Precious hits theaters in November and all kidding aside I hear it’s an amazing movie and Mariah does a fantastic job and makes her haggard appearance quite believable.

Mariah Carey’s release of Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel which is set for an September 29th release will include a 34 page co production with Elle magazine that includes lifestyle ads from Elizabeth Arden, Angel Champagne, Carmen Steffens, Le Metier de Beaute and the Bahamas Board of Tourism.

The label will be planning deals for artist such as Rihanna, Bon Jovi, Kanye West and others if this experiment goes well.

This is a great and innovative way to acquire capital to help with album budgets and help brands establish themselves in a different market.

The booklets were created for the first run of U.S. CDs (1 million) and the first 500,000 overseas, said Jeff Straughn, svp-strategic marketing for Island Def Jam Music Group. It will also be available in a digital format for those who buy music online. A condensed version of the Mariah mag, sans the 14 pages of CD-specific material, will be inserted into 500,000 subscription copies of Elle’s October issue, which arrives mid-September.

“The idea was really simple thinking: ‘We sell millions of records, so you should advertise with us,’” said  Antonio “L.A.” Reid, chairman, Island Def Jam Music Group, a unit of Universal Music Group. “My artists have substantial circulation—when you sell 2 million, 5 million, 8 million, that’s a lot of eyeballs. Most magazines aren’t as successful as those records.”

Artist been promoting brands for free through word of mouth in their song lyrics its about time they start selling brands ad space on their albums.

The Push that Mariah is in is a lot more serious and has the critics paying attention to her performance…in a good way. Movie premiered at Sundance and took home three awards including the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award.

Movie is about a young girl in Harlem named Precious Jones struggling to overcome tremendous obstacles and discover her own voice. Verbally and sexually abused by her family, her troubles lead to problems in school. Precious has no friends, no money, two kids (from her father), and she’s illiterate but comes across a concerned social worker (Carey) and a nurse who show her incredible kindness.

Mariah’s indie movie Tennessee already has a Golden Globe nomination for Best Song even though it has not even released wide yet. The movie originally released back in December but only for a week so that it could qualify for awards contention but will finally be having an “official” release in March of 2009Is the new movie poster to Tennessee Trendz Report worthy or Glitter worthy? According to New York‚Äôs Daily News, Mariah Carey has been cast in the upcoming movie Push, as a social worker from Harlem, looking after an HIV-positive woman impregnated twice by her father. Wow that’s messed up. Director Lee Daniels gave Carey the role after working with her in his earlier film Tennessee which hits theaters in December. Mariah’s role in Tennessee was met with mixed reviews but overall redeemed herself from the disaster only known as Glitter. Lee Daniels is best known for his work producing Monster’s Ball with Halle Berry and Diddy.

Carey will also work on the development of a movie musical based on her 1994 album Merry Christmas. The plot is set on a ruthless developer wanting to transform a small town into a gigantic mall.

‚ÄúMariah doesn‚Äôt want to let that happen,” Mariah’s old manager Benny Medina told the Daily News. ‚ÄúHer character uses song and love to keep the Christmas spirit alive.‚Äù

With High School Musical writer Peter Barschonni behind the script, Carey also talked about the importance of this project and its’ timing.

“Since I recorded the Christmas album, I’ve always wanted to make a movie to go with it, something that people could watch and hear and enjoy every year,” she told the Daily News. “I’m into it. I’m all about the holiday season.”
