50 Cent’s new album to include Jam Master Jay documentary

50 Cent’s new album to include Jam Master Jay documentary

50 Cent’s next album “Before I Self Destruct” has been waiting for a release date for some time now. Finally it hits stores on November 24th with not only the CD and the Before I Self Destruct movie that 50 hyped up so much, but NOW it will also come with another movie! That’s right..a CD and two movies. It has been confirmed that the deluxe edition will contain the Jam Master Jay documentary Two Turntables and a Microphone (trailer).

Artists and labels are doing everything they can nowadays to move units and the big trend for the bigger budget artists is including mini-movies. Snoop will be dropping his Malice in Wonderland with a movie as well. Only SoundScan can tell us though if it’s helping sell though.

Snoop Dogg makes mini-movie for “Malice in Wonderland”

Snoop Dogg makes mini-movie for “Malice in Wonderland”

Snoop Dogg x Malice in Wonderland. Taking a page out of 50 Cent’s marketing playbook, Snoop Dogg is currently filming a mini-movie to accompany the release of his first Priority Records album “Malice in Wonderland.”

“One thing about me with my projects is I always have to give you a visual beyond the video because the video can only show you 4 minutes of what I am expressing,” Snoop explained. “I wanted to do a movie so people could really engulf my whole feeling of this record when I was making it. Hopefully you’ll enjoy it, and it’ll give you what you’re missing.”

If it’s anything like the Murder Was the Case mini-movie we are sold. The album hits stores on December 8, 2009 with each album including the accompanied mini-movie. No word yet on the plot or the title of the movie although we do know Snoop plays of all things…a hardcore gangster in it.

You can expect more and more artists to film these mini-movies and other “incentives” for consumers to purchase albums vs. illegally downloading. That is until the movie gets thrown up on the web.

Snoop Dogg takes executive job at Priority Records

Snoop Dogg takes executive job at Priority Records

Snoop will be taking his Doggfather status to the home of one of hip-hop’s most notorious labels, Priority as the newly appointed Creative Chairman. His job will be to relaunch Priority into the strong hip-hop force it used to be back in the days when it launched NWA, Ruthless Records, No Limit Records and Death Row. Ted Chung, Snoop’s long-time manager will become Brand Strategist for Priority, to help execute Snoop’s business vision for the label and launch a strong digital initiative.

“Starting fresh with EMI is a great feeling. It’s a new partnership, a new Priority Records, and a new Snoop Dogg: the Creative Chairman…the Boss Dogg…the Dogg Father. The business model we’ve developed will bring the musical heritage of groups like N.W.A. to the forefront” Snoop stated.

Snoop previously was part of the Priority Records family well after the break away from Death Row. It will be really interesting to see what Snoop and his creative team can bring to the table to help reinvigorate the storied label.

Death Row Records goes into movie business

Death Row Records goes into movie business

The newly resurrected Death Row has officially announced that they will be launching a film production unit that will heavily utilize the famed Death Row Records catalog. The Hollywood Reporter states that Death Row Films is set to shoot their first movie called Sons 2 The Grave (not to be confused with DMX’s Cradle To The Grave) in Toronto this October. The movie will use songs from the label catalog which of course includes Dr. Dre, Snoop, Tupac, Tha Doggpound, etc.

The film is about a young basketball phenom returning to an embattled inner city ghetto after two gunshots cut short his dream of an NBA career. So basically like the life of 50 Cent but replace “rapper” with “basketball player.” The film is said to still be fairly low budget as the new Death Row entire operations was recently purchased out of bankruptcy for $18 million. The new president of the company Lara Levi stated the following:

“This film embodies what we’re trying to do with Death Row, to tell human stories that don’t always have happy endings, and that allow us to learn from violence and disenfranchised lives, but not glorify it.”

“We’re looking at film properties that relate to “Boyz ‘n the Hood”-type stories, and to power the films with Death Row music,” Lavi said.

In the mean time, Lavi continues to look for ways to make money off of the catalog while physical CD sales continue to plummet. The label has already secured deals to license Death Row songs for EA Games, TV’s “CSI” and “Cold Case.” On one hand it’s good to see Death Row still alive and kicking…on the other hand we can’t just help but think that the Death Row name and catalog is now just getting pimped out to the highest bidder. Somewhere Pac is turning in his grave.

Snoop unveils his $300K wax figure

Snoop Dogg x Madame Tussauds. Snoop Dogg unveiled himself…ahem…the $300K wax version of himself yesterday at Madame Tussauds in Vegas. He becomes the third hip-hop artist to be immortalized in wax behind Pac and BIG. It would have been nice if he wore his LBC black hoodie from “Nothin But G Thang” though. That’s classic right there.
