T-Pain sheds traditional distribution for Nappy Boy record label

T-Pain x Nappy Boy Digital.
Does T-Pain’s record label hold the keys to the future for the music industry? It’s no secret that digital sales of music continue to increase while physical CD sales whimper along…so to T-Pain it just makes perfect sense to do away with the physical CD altogether.

“Nappy Boy Digital is a digital company, basically based on the Internet, it’s on iTunes and not really a physical company, you know what I’m saying?” stated T-Pain in a recent interview. ”A lot of people are pressing up all these CDs and pressing up all these extra jewel cases and the inserts and and all that stuff and then everybody’s buying the stuff on the Internet so it’s not making them any money, they losing money, so, Nappy Boy Digital is my digital company, it’s all Internet and that’s just how we go.”

For the number of units that a smaller label like Nappy Boy would press per year it actually does make sense to go digital and avoiding not only the physical product fees but also the sales and placeholder fees for getting your album placed in stores to begin with. It’s only a matter of time before all labels go digital…it’s not like you really buy CDs at Best Buy or Wal-Mart anymore do you? You can check T-Pain and his Nappy Boy crew over at NappyBoyOnline.com.

Lil Wayne to play Jesus Christ in T-Pain cartoon “Freakniks”

Lil Wayne to play Jesus Christ in T-Pain cartoon “Freakniks”

Lil Wayne x T-Pain x Cartoon Network. Lil Wayne is teaming up with T-Pain in the Adult Swim cartoon special “Freakniks.” Weezy is set to play Jesus Christ in the cartoon and and will be creating a mock music video to accompany the role called “The Ghetto Commandments.”

“Basically it was a Black Spring Break that went down in Atlanta and got shut down back in ‘98 or ‘99. So the show is going to resurrect that, and it’s going to be starring T-Pain and Lil’ Wayne and all these other artists like David and some other dudes,”
said Adult Swim creative director Jake Escobedo. “It’s all drawn, and T-Pain plays the ghost of spring break, the Spirit of Freaknik. He brings this party back to Atlanta and the artists have done all this music for it, and it’s amazing.”

T-Pain and Adult Swim have formed a solid relationship as T-Pain previously played Frylock in the live-action version of “Aqua Teen Hunger Force” and is also a big fan of many Adult Swim programs.

VIDEO: The Nappy Headz call out T-Pain in new documentary

The Nappy Headz x The Nappy Headz Story. Before there was Auto-Tune in hip-hop, before there was T-Pain the multi-platinum album artist…there were The Nappy Headz. Similar to Eminem and D-12, The Florida based Nappy Headz made a pact that if one of them got big that they would back up the rest of the group in bringing them to stardom as well.

Apparently T-Pain didn’t do as planned and The Nappy Headz are calling him out in this full-length documentary.

The way you did it. You didn’t tell us. You just started making songs. You ran off,” a member of the group says in the film’s trailer. “It had to be a Nappy Head for them to know T-Pain.”

“I’m just disappointed in the way he let the success get to him,” another member added.

Well looks like they are making money through him now…or trying to depending on how many people actually buy the DVD. You can buy it at the official site for $14.95.

AdAge selects Auto-Tune as hottest brand of 2009

AdAge selects Auto-Tune as hottest brand of 2009

AdAge just announced that the technology and sound that T-Pain made famous is now one of the Hottest Brands of 2009. Jay-Z would not be happy as Antares Audio Technologies’ Auto-Tune made AdAge’s yearly hot list of top brands. Ad Age states:

“Consumer spending may have gone cold in 2009, but that didn’t stop these marketers from turning up the temperature. Here Ad Age chooses the upstarts and established brands that are setting the pace for innovation — and getting results — right now. Auto-Tune, the vocal pitch correction software, may be the most obscure product that almost everybody knows,” and go on to describe Auto-Tune’s ubiquitous presence and brand name recognition in everything from hip hop music and popular YouTube videos to the I Am T-Pain iPhone app.”

Although Auto-Tune clearly has its haters there is no denying that it was one of the most popular branded names of the year in music and in popular culture. Parent company Antares was quick to capitalize on the new found publicity that T-Pain brought their company and technology and licensced their Auto-Tune technology for everything from TV commercials to iPhone apps.

I Am T-Pain still Top 10 top grossing iPhone app

iphone2

T-Pain x I Am T-Pain. As we reported earlier this month, T-Pain’s iPhone app “I Am T-Pain” has been downloaded over 300,000 times grossing the producer close to $1 million. Although some thought it would just be a passing fad, Apple has recently reported their top grossing iPhone applications and “I Am T-Pain” is still going strong at #9.

It is currently out grossing top apps such as EA’s FIFA Soccer, The Sims 3, Scrabble and Monopoly. Although it seems every hip-hop artist these days is coming out with their own iPhone apps as an alternative revenue stream, only T-Pain can really claim true million dollar success.

T-Pain x Brothers. T-Pain makes his major network TV debut on an upcoming episode of the sitcom “Brothers” which stars former NY Giant Michael Strahan. The episode airs on Friday Oct 9th 8pm on FOX where T-Pain actually plays himself…but broke.  Here is the official storyline:

In the episode, Mike (Michael Strahan) and Chill (Daryl Mitchell) encounter a financially strapped T Pain at Trainor’s, the family’s restaurant.

Guess that means  no “BIG ASS CHAIN” for T-Pain as he results to selling stolen watches to make money. T-Pain previously appeared on a live-action version of “Aqua Teen Hunger Force” where he played Frylock. Check out more pics from the “Brothers” episode after the jump. Via: CL

T-Pain’s “I Am T-Pain” iPhone app downloaded over 300,000 times

T-Pain’s “I Am T-Pain” iPhone app downloaded over 300,000 times

T-Pain x I Am T-Pain. While artists search for new ways to make money outside of actual album sales, T-Pain has already tapped into the lucrative iPhone app business. According to app developer Smule, T-Pain’s “I Am T-Pain” iPhone app has already been downloaded 300,000 times in just three weeks.

At a price of $2.99 per download that’s almost a gross of a cool million dollars. Not bad for a little app that everyone thought was just a gimmick. Regardless of a gimmick or not…it’s T-Pain that is laughing his way to the bank. Via: Mashable
